350.org is an environmental movement that has its roots in the United States. It works on getting the public all over the world to act positively towards growing concerns about climate change.

To preserve our planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 392 parts per million (ppm) to below 350 ppm. But 350 is more than just a number — it’s a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.

Every year, 350.org holds events simultaneously worldwide with a united theme to create awareness and to help people take the first steps towards an environmentally sustainable lifestyle. This year, that day will be September 24.

So where does Dubai come in? Simple. On Saturday, 24 September, we’ll meet at the Mall of Emirates Metro Station (you know those little alien pods on the side of SZR? Yeah, those) at 1pm and leave on the metro at 2pm SHARP down the red line to Rashidiya. From there we’ll take a public bus to Mirdif City Center to take part in a walkathon and human mural. Fun. Fun. Fun. Fun.

We’re using public transport because the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) serves the community with an eco friendly, sustainable option to travelling around town. Our final stop is Mirdif City Centre which is a green mall with a LEED certification!

There’ll be loads of great company on the ride, so make sure you’re on time.

On 22nd August, we successfully conducted phase 1 of our labour camp Iftars in association with Adopt a Camp and Karama Kanteen. We distributed 600 meals to workers whose tireless efforts have helped built this very country. We used a total of AED6,600 ($1,797) from the money we raised in June and July.

The remaining AED8,400 ($2,287) will be used today, August 27, to distribute over a thousand meals.

Stay tuned for more updates!

We love you guys!

We are extremely happy and proud to announce that AED 66,000 ($17,970) was raised tonight at the ACT for a cause event that was organized by our superstar Maleha Awan in the Fujairah Tennis & Country Club.

This leaves us with a total of AED111,000 ($30,220) this month in the name of the East African Drought. We’re still totaling the amount from individual donations at the donation boxes from the event.

Thank you everyone who has donated, volunteered and helped spread the word!

Those that were left behind

We’ve all been hearing horrifying gut wrenching stories coming in from famine stricken East Africa. Of children dying, of people travelling for miles to reach food and families drinking each others urine to stay alive.

But what kept me awake one night was reading this particular story of Parents’ having to make the decision of which child to leave behind.

Parents fleeing the devastating famine on foot – sometimes with as many as seven children in tow – are having to make unimaginably cruel choices: Which children have the best chance to survive when food and water run low? Who should be left behind?

I’m not a Mother, but I have nieces and nephews who I would give anything to keep happy. I’ve also seen their Mothers’ love for them and how they come running when they’re the slightest hurt. At first, it was difficult for me to understand how the Parents could leave their little children behind but then I realised it wasn’t their fault. When survival instincts kick-in the best of us will resort to do anything possible to live and that it what this situation of famine prompted these Parents to do.

Wardo Mohamud Yusuf walked for two weeks with her 1-year-old daughter on her back and her 4-year-old son at her side to flee Somalia’s drought and famine. When the boy collapsed near the end of the journey, she poured some of the little water she had on his head to cool him, but he was unconscious and could not drink.

She asked other families traveling with them for help, but none stopped, fearful for their own survival.

Then the 29-year-old mother had to make a choice that no parent should have to make.

“Finally, I decided to leave him behind to his God on the road,” Yusuf said days later in an interview at a teeming refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya. “I am sure that he was alive, and that is my heartbreak.”

We can, however, blame ourselves. We, who even during the month of Ramadan, a month of restraint and fasting will waste food in lavish iftars. We’re living in the 21st century, a time when some countries are actually suffering from obesity. A time where gyms and clinics that treat over-eating disorders flourish. A time where food is thrown away in bulk and yet in this same century there is a part of the world which is dying because they don’t have a morsel of food to eat. According to this same article, nearly 29,000 children under the age of 5 have already died and more are expected to die in the coming months if we don’t get aid across to East Africa.

The question is, what are we going to do? Will we sit and watch our brothers & sisters in humanity die or will be donate at least AED 10/10 Dollars to charity organisations that are working there?

Don’t just read and mourn, help those in need by joining forces with your local charity organisations that are helping East Africa and spread the word.

ACT for a cause, August 26

Before you attack us for our events being too Dubai-centric, hear us out. Maleha Arif (a Flea 4 Charity member) and Maitha Al Jasim are hosting ACT for a causeon August 26 at the Fujairah Tennis and Country Club.

Maleha, who lives in Fujairah, has been involved in several Dubai-based charity groups and wants to do something closer to home. She pitched the idea to friends and family, who then helped spread the word.

The event will kickstart with an Iftar buffet in at the Country Club and will be followed by a garage sale in the Ramadan tent. The Iftar is sponsored by Fujairah Media Group, who have been a tremendous amount of help in getting the word out.

Expect a plethora of items at the garage sale: bags, accessories, books, dvds, ornaments, lamps, frames, clothes, shoes, and lots more! All these items have been generously donated from all across the country. A presentation will also be given to attendees about the situation in East Africa and how they can help those and get involved.

All the money raised will be added to the funds raised by Flea 4 Charity and submitted to Red Crescent to fight famine in East Africa.

For details please visit the event page or contact Maleha on 050 690-7313

Flea Market 20/8 Roundup

Tonight we had Salvador Dali prints, vintage couture, sound systems, literature, genuine crystal home accessories and insane amounts of energy.

This flea market, we procured five tables and each sold different kinds of items: kids’ stuff and games, electronics, jewelry, books, and home accessories ranging from AED 5 to AED 70. We also had four clothes racks AND dozens of bargain boxes of assorted garments, shoes, jeans and handbags. Our resident band went through great lengths to attract as much attention to our tables as possible, and it worked. Being tone deaf and playing the tambourine, I’m pretty sure I did more harm than good but that was quickly rectified when another one of the volunteers kindly relieved me of my post as the crazy tambourine lady.

We also had two amazing photographers who documented the whole experience just so you don’t feel like you’ve missed out. The pictures should be up by the morning, but for now, feast your eyes on our amazing team of volunteers:

Well, ‘what’s the final figure?’ you ask?

We raised more than 19,000 ($5,173) tonight!

This brings our total funds for Somalia and East Africa to AED 45,150 ($12,293), and the number’s still rising. I just received calls from friends saying that they want to donate more!

We’d like to thank EVERYONE who dropped by, bought stuff, volunteered, bought us food and water, donated, transported boxes, did heavy lifting and helped get the word out. You are truly awesome. Onwards and upwards!

Saturday, August 20 Night Flea Market for Somalia and East Africa

Tags

Bring your good spirits, coin purses and wallets from 8pm on Saturday the 20th at Stargate, Zabeel Park because Flea 4 Charity will be holding another round of fundraising for Somalia! Following our success on the 6th by raising a whopping AED 18,000 in one night, we hope to double or even triple that amount next week.

The usual suspects will be there, along with lots of great (and obscure) items you can snap up for a fraction of their original price. Seriously. We sold a toaster and fax machine last week. We have EVERYTHING.

If you want to donate items for us to sell, our collection point is at The Pavilion, Downtown Dubai on Wednesday 17 August from 8pm to 11pm. We’d suggest you start your own collection drive this week amongst your friends and neighbours and drop the items off on Wednesday. Some of our volunteers would even be willing to pick up items from your home, so leave us a comment below or get in touch with us via Facebook or Twitter, and we’ll see what we can do. :)

This is just a glimpse of what to expect next week:

Remember, Flea 4 Charity isn’t the only cause you can donate to at Dubai’s Flea Market. Voice 4 Charity and Dubai Animal Rescue Centre will be setting up shop, too! And if you need any more reason to drop by, video blogger @ShamimScene will be there filming the event so here’s your chance to get your 15 minutes of fame.

[For those who haven't been to Stargate in Zabeel Park yet, follow the signs to Area A of the Park -- in between the Karama and Jafliya Metro stations -- and drive up to gate 4. Entrance fee is AED 5 per person.]
